What Are Pediatric Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped dental prostheses that are designed to cover up the entire tooth. For all intents and purposes, your child’s pediatric dental crown will replace their natural tooth, covering it all the way down to the gum line.

Crowns can be made out of many different materials, but we offer white zirconia crowns at Aviation Pediatric Dental Associates. Zirconia crowns provide excellent protection and look more natural than other types of crowns, such as pre-fitted stainless steel crowns.

What Can Pediatric Dental Crowns Treat?

Large or deep cavities

If your child has a very deep cavity in one of their teeth, a pediatric dental crown will usually provide superior protection compared to a dental filling.

Infected teeth

If your child has an infected tooth and requires a pulpotomy or a root canal, a pediatric dental crown is the best way to cover up and protect their tooth after treatment.

Cracked, chipped, broken teeth

Accidents happen. If your child’s tooth chips, cracks, or breaks, a pediatric dental crown is usually the best option for treatment. With a white zirconia crown from Aviation Pediatric Dental Associates, you can restore your child’s smile and bite, and prevent further complications caused by damaged teeth.

The Pediatric Crown Treatment Process

Tooth prep and trimming

To begin the treatment process, Dr. Hobbs will clean your child’s mouth and numb the treatment area. We also offer pediatric sedation to help your little one stay comfortable. Once the area is numb, Dr. Hobbs will gently remove any compromised tooth structure.

Placing their crown

After their tooth has been trimmed and shaped, our Memphis pediatric dentist will select a pre-fitted zirconia crown that matches your child’s smile. She will make sure it fits properly, then bond it to the tooth structure with dental cement.

Fit check and polishing

Once your little one’s crown is in place, Dr. Hobbs will perform another fit check to make sure it fits properly, and make any necessary adjustments. Then, she’ll polish your little one’s new tooth. That’s it!

Should My Child Get A Dental Crown On A Baby Tooth?

If that’s the treatment that Dr. Hobbs recommends, then yes! Dental crowns are a great way to cover up and protect damaged baby teeth until your child’s permanent adult tooth comes out. And since we use white zirconia crowns at Aviation Pediatric Dental Associates, they look and feel totally natural.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Pediatric Crowns?

Yes. Pediatric dental crowns are considered to be medically necessary, so they are covered by dental insurance for kids. In most cases, your plan will pay between 50% and 80% of the cost of the crown. For more information about your coverage, we recommend consulting directly with your insurer and your policy information.
